In Hunan, the mountains do not stand. They float. There is a kind of mountain that does not photograph well — it must be walked into. The pillars of Zhangjiajie rise from the valley like a misunderstanding of geology; Mount Heng, further south, has been receiving pilgrims for fifteen hundred years and shows no sign of tiring of them.
What follows is the journey we would like you to make with us — six days, five nights, an unhurried clock. We have left room for weather, for long lunches, and for the parts that cannot be planned.
